restaurantEvery year for the Ramadan, we do a daily buffet to celebrate the breaking of fast. One year our Hotel Manager said he wanted something different than the norm. So we decorated the coffeehouse to look like a traditional Malay Village with a buffet of local traditional dishes. As usual I search the web for ideas on ways to attract customers to our Ramadan break fast buffet. I found a blog where someone posted a crazy idea done by another restaurant, which was a flyer that looked like a police summon. That’s what is so great about the web, its loaded with information. So I created flyers to look like Police Summons. (It was not exactly the same). The summons gave the bearer a 20% discount on a single bill upon presentation of the flyer. Make sure you check with your local enforcement whether you can use this idea. As for us we did it with a road safety campaign as everyone goes back to their hometown for the Eid ul-Fitr festival. The police normally did road blocks to distribute flyers on road safety. So we were also there giving out this flyers together with their safety campaign leaflets. We also gave out mini hampers with dates and goodies in it for every ten cars that were stopped. With this we saw a 20% increase in the revenue for the buffet. Sometimes we received calls making reservations where the caller jokingly said that they were summoned.

Going the Extra Mile :-Simple way of stopping wobbly restaurant tables

In my restaurant I hate seeing pieces of serviettes, paper or coasters placed under my restaurant tables, to stop it from wobbling. If you are like me, try this simple and cheap method. Slice wine corks and place them below the legs of wobbling table. Your table won’t be wobbly, won’t have unsightly paper sticking out from under it and your guest will be happy to enjoy their meal. Keep some on standby. Customer satisfaction is another good way to market your restaurant.

The World Wide Web is loaded with blogs giving you restaurant promotion ideas that you can use. Formerly if we needed creative ideas, we had to look through or purchase lots of magazines to see what others were doing. It was really time consuming and some of ideas cannot be used. Reason being you will be labeled a copycat, as the other restaurant in your area is doing the same thing. To me the World Wide Web is the greatest invention to men. You can get billions upon billions of information at your fingertips. Further more some of the ideas are from other part of the world so you can use it without worrying people labeling you a copycat. You can even search for a specific promotional idea that you need. That is why I like to search the web for an idea to my current promotion. Below are some of the ideas that I feel is workable.

Workable Ideas from the Web

# 1. Bounce back Ideaidea
If you have slow months after busy months then this promotional idea is a great idea to fill up the slow months. First prepare vouchers on items that you want to give to your customers to entice them to come back on the slow months. It can be items ranging from discounts to free entrée or desserts. Then put all vouchers in a bowl at the cashier’s counter. Set a target for a customer to spend on a single bill. When he reaches the amount, invite him over to the cashier’s counter or bring the bowl to him. Ask him to pull a voucher to be used when he returns next month. The voucher is only valid for the slow month.

# 2. Frequent Diner Passport
This is a great activity if you have buffet every night and is even better if its set to a theme country, then you can call it “Around the World buffet”. Create a passport or something similar and hand out to potential customers. Everytime the customer eats the buffet, stamp a part of the voucher. Set a target of how many stamps that the customer needs to have for him to get a free dinner. You can call it your “Frequent Diner Program“. To make it even better your staff can be dressed as flight attendants.

# 3. Employee Marketing Challenge
Your staff is your best marketers. With their help you can reach more people. What you need is to challenge them to bring in the people. One way is to create vouchers for them distribute. Create different colour vouchers maybe a hundred each. Hand it to your staff to distribute. Allocate one colour to one staff. Challenge them by saying that the most vouchers that comes back, the winner will receive a prize. This is to ensure your staff hands over the voucher to people who will come and dine. The items on the vouchers can range from discounts to free entree. The choice is yours but make it fun for staff. You can call the vouchers “Privilege Diner” vouchers and can get your staff to sign the vouchers, so as the staff will feel important.

Since we had a Steak Promotion coming up, we printed a picture of a cow holding a sign with words like “”Have u tried our double cut beef “. We put the cutouts at strategic places around the hotel, in the lifts, by the reception table, even at the entrance (be careful if you need to place outside, don’t get in trouble with the law). On the menu and entrance poster we placed a picture of the cow next to the picture of the dish. We received quite a number for the beef orders. Even some TV channels are captilizing on this idea. Suddenly you will see a small person or cartoon character walking across the screen highlighting what coming up or what to watch for.

Restaurant Idea #2. Doorknobs with your Specials on It

When I was working in a small beach resort. I noticed that our guest will normally spends their day on the beach or restaurantsightseeingreturning only in the early evenings. So I thought why not create something to highlight our Italian Specials that the guest will notice once they come to the room. Flyers under the door was out of the question as it might be overlooked when the guest walks in.
